Isamu Noguchi was a notable 20th century artist and landscape architect. Born in Los Angeles to an American writer, Leonie Gilmour and a Japanese poet Yonejiro Noguchi on November 17 1904. Two years later he went with his mother, to join his father in Japan, where he spent the rest of his childhood.
In 1918 he was sent to the United States for schooling, where he graduated from La Porte High School in 1922. In 1924 Noguchi dropped out of University to pursue sculpture full-time. In the ensuing years he gained in prominence and acclaim, leaving his large-scale works in many of the world s major cities.
His works were not limited to sculptures and gardens though. He has designed mass-produced objects such as lamps and modern furniture, some of which are still manufactured today. Among his furniture work was his collaboration with the Herman Miller Company in 1948 where he joined with George Nelson, Paul Lazlo and Charles Eames to produce a catalogue containing what is often considered to be the most influential body of modern furniture.
Through his work as a sculptor and designer Isamu Noguchi considered himself “an interpreter of the East to the West.” Influenced by nature, his highly abstract and sculptural furniture designs were often intended to express the essence of natural landscape. His designs are reflections of the artists struggle to see, alter, and recreate his natural surroundings as seen in the Noguchi Coffee Table
